Dr. Joel A. Freeman makes public a 1910 audio recording of Jack Johnson, capturing his reflections on his historic “Fight of the Century” victory and its impact.

United States, 30th Jan 2025 – The Freeman Institute Foundation has announced the groundbreaking public release of a 1910 recording featuring Jack Johnson, the first Black heavyweight boxing world champion, sharing his thoughts on the legendary “Fight of the Century.” This artifact offers more than a glimpse into the historic July 4th, 1910, bout in Reno, Nevada — it reveals a turning point in sports and American society. Just 20 days after his victory over James Jeffries, Johnson recorded his perspective on the fight at Columbia Phonographic Co. in New York City, making history not only in the ring but also as one of the first athletes to capture his voice on record.

The Freeman Institute Foundation, led by respected historian and educator Dr. Joel A. Freeman, is now sharing this rare recording globally for the first time, coinciding with Black History Month.

Jack Johnson’s Perspective: A Rare Glimpse into the Mind of a Champion

This extraordinary 78 rpm test pressing captures Jack Johnson in his own voice as he reflects on the 15th round of his decisive victory. Johnson’s methodical approach to defeating Jeffries — dubbed “The Great White Hope” — was more than a physical triumph. It was a strategic and psychological masterclass that shattered barriers of racial inequality in early 20th-century America.

“Jack’s thoughts on the fight reveal a man of remarkable intelligence and resilience,” said Dr. Freeman. “He meticulously broke down Jeffries’ strengths and exposed his weaknesses, demonstrating an extraordinary blend of physical skill and mental acuity.”

The recording, acquired by Dr. Freeman from a British antiquarian dealer, is believed to be the only existing test pressing of Johnson’s description of the all-important 15th round. It includes Johnson’s detailed account of his training philosophy and preparation, encapsulated in a timeless 10-point “war strategy” that transcends athletic competition and remains relevant today.

A Century-Old Recording Enhanced by Modern Technology

Despite being over 115 years old, the audio has been meticulously restored using artificial intelligence. This process reduced the pops and hisses of the original recording and amplified Johnson’s voice while preserving its authenticity.

“This is history meeting technology,” said Dr. Freeman. “The restored recording not only allows us to hear Johnson’s words more clearly, but also to feel the weight of the moment they represent.”

The release also includes an accompanying limited print edition of Jack Johnson Speaks, signed by the author for the first 5,000 copies, which explores Johnson’s 10-point “war strategy” in greater depth. A QR code within the publication links to a blues-inspired music video that combines archival footage of the 15th round with a modern tribute to Johnson’s legacy.

A Cultural Milestone with Global Impact

The release of this recording comes at a time when preserving and sharing cultural history has never been more important. Jack Johnson’s story is not just about boxing — it’s about defying the odds and challenging systemic injustice during one of America’s most racially divisive eras.

All proceeds from Jack Johnson Speaks, including the unprecedented publication of the recording, will support the Freeman Institute Foundation’s Rosetta Universe project, a global initiative aimed at fostering critical thinking skills and the ROSETTA problem-solving process.

For a $10 donation, individuals can gain access to Johnson’s recording, better understand Jack Johnson’s genius, and contribute to a cause that bridges history and education for future generations. This is the type of inventive project that would have attracted the attention of the likes of Jack Johnson.

A New Generation Learns About Jack Johnson

Dr. Freeman’s efforts to share this artifact align with his broader mission to educate through the Freeman Institute Foundation’s extensive Black History Collection. With over 3,000 genuine documents and artifacts, the collection has been showcased in exhibitions at renowned institutions, including the United Nations, the Clinton Presidential Library, NIH, FBI, and the Secret Service.

This initiative also complements Freeman’s work as coauthor of the K-12 Black History 365 curriculum (with Dr. Walter Milton, Jr.), which has been adopted by more than 420 public school districts and many private and home schools across the United States.

“Jack Johnson’s story is one of courage and brilliance,” said Dr. Freeman. “By sharing this recording, we’re not just preserving history — we’re inspiring a new generation to understand and appreciate its significance.”
