This autumn, The Royal Ballet School will bring its comprehensive teacher training programme, Inspire, to The Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. Running from 29 September to 3 October 2024, the five-day intensive will let vocational and recreational dance teachers explore new ideas, skills, and techniques for teaching classical ballet.

Booking for the Inspire intensive in Australia is now open and closes on 12 September 2024. Here are the programme details.

The Inspire Intensive at The Australian Ballet School

The Inspire Intensive at The Australian Ballet School comprises four days of seminars. The fifth day will then feature a roundtable discussion with expert dance educators and a health and well-being workshop. Dance teachers of all experience levels can book individual seminar days for £220 or the full five-day Intensive for £1,050.

Day One: 29 September

The day-one seminar will cover the foundations of classical ballet technique, offering practical and observational analysis of teaching barre work and port de bras.

It will also explore good teaching practice, helping participants develop a personal teaching philosophy.

Day Two: 30 September

The day-two seminar will provide an overview of motor development and learning in relation to dance teaching. It will also include practical and observational analysis of teaching centre practice and pirouettes, along with strategies to enhance communication for optimal student learning.

Additionally, the seminar will involve an analysis and discussion of students’ learning needs and styles and their implications for teaching.

Day Three: 1 October

The day-three seminar will offer an overview of the development of allegro and artistry, with practical and observational analysis of effective allegro performance. It will also explore aspects of style and artistry through practice.

On top of this, the seminar will introduce the essentials of effective lesson planning and help participants develop their understanding of motivation and effective feedback.

Day Four: 2 October

The day-four seminar will provide an overview of teaching pointe work, covering pre-pointe training through to advanced levels.

It will also cover strategies for developing students’ strength and control on pointe and explore enchainment construction and delivery, with opportunities for feedback.

Day Five: 3 October

The day-five roundtable discussion will focus on effective communication in the dance studio. It will also cover topics like appropriate feedback and language and the influence of the dance teacher on students.

Distinguished arts consultant and former Head of the Australian Government’s Office for the Arts Sally Baser will chair the discussion. Panel members will include The Royal Ballet School’s Director of Training and Access Mark Annear and Senior Teacher Training Manager Karen Berry.

After the roundtable, The Australian Ballet School’s Artistic Director and Head of School Megan Connelly will lead a health and well-being workshop. Other experts from the school, including Head of Teaching and Learning Lynette Wills, will join her in presenting subjects like:

  • Pointe shoe fitting.
  • Pointe strength and conditioning exercises.
  • Strategies to strengthen the foot and gluteal muscles.
  • Effective calf rise technique.

The workshop will also include a typical Australian Ballet School calf assessment.

The Royal Ballet School’s 2024/25 Inspire Intensives

The Royal Ballet School runs a series of Inspire Intensives for dance teachers in the UK and overseas each academic year. The seminars explore the foundations of classical ballet technique, advanced elements of technique and artistry, and good teaching practice.

Inspire students have praised the Intensives, describing the content and delivery as “superb” and “informative.” Many participants have noted that the seminars have deepened their understanding of classical ballet and refreshed their teaching practices.

In addition to the programme at The Australian Ballet School, the 2024/25 Inspire season includes events in Singapore, London, and Hong Kong.

Empowering Dance Educators
