Significant Rise in Azerbaijani Scientists’ International Scientific Activities Achievements of 2024

0

The indicators of Azerbaijani scientists in the “Scopus” bibliometric database have improved significantly in the first eight months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. These indicators include user numbers, the number of published scientific works, citations of scientific works, field-weighted citation impact, the quality of the journals in which they are published, and international collaboration.

For instance, the number of users in Azerbaijan on “Scopus” has more than doubled in the first eight months of this year compared to last year, reaching 13,000.

Moreover, there is an observed increase in the articles published by Azerbaijani scientists on “Scopus.” The number of articles published by Azerbaijani scientists, which was just over 1,800 last year, has risen to 2,382 this year. Considering that the count of published scientific works in 2024 will continue until May-June 2025, it is likely that the total number of scientific works in the country will exceed 3,000 for the first time in history.

In addition to the quantity of published scientific works, the quality is also increasing. Specifically, 11.2% of our scientists’ articles in the database are among the top 10% most cited scientific works in the world. Last year, this figure was 9.2%. Azerbaijan’s field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) reached 1.97 in 2024, exceeding the global average (1.0). This means that all published scientific works received, on average, 97% more citations in their respective fields. Last year, this indicator was 1.05.

Articles Published in Quality Journals

Additionally, in the first eight months of 2024, 1,481 of the published articles appeared in Q1 (996) or Q2 (485) quartile journals. This figure was 733 in the same period last year (Q1 – 486, Q2 – 257).

Increase in International Collaboration

In the 12 months of last year, the number of scientific works published in international collaboration (i.e., with foreign co-authors) was 856 (47%), while this figure rose to 1,594 (67%) in the first eight months of the current year. This increase further strengthens Azerbaijan’s role in the international scientific environment and contributes to the expansion of scientific collaborations.

What is the Scopus Platform?

Scopus is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary abstract and citation database covering scientific literature, including journal articles, conference proceedings, and patents. Managed by Elsevier, Scopus is a crucial resource for researchers, academic institutions, and organizations to access and evaluate scholarly work. The main features of Scopus include:

  1. Extensive Database: Scopus indexes literature from over 25 million records across more than 5,000 journals in various fields.
  2. Citation Tracking: Users can track citations of their works and others, aiding in the assessment of the impact and reach of scholarly publications.
  3. Author Profiles: Scopus provides profiles of authors, including their publication history, citation metrics, and h-index (a measure of productivity and citation impact).
  4. Journal Evaluation: Users can evaluate journals based on various metrics like CiteScore.
  5. Search and Analysis Tools: Scopus offers advanced search capabilities that allow users to filter results based on specific criteria, as well as analytical tools to visualize research trends and outcomes.
  6. Interdisciplinary Coverage: The database encompasses various fields, including science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and humanities, making it a valuable resource for researchers.
  7. International Collaboration: Scopus emphasizes international collaboration in research, enabling users to identify co-authors and institutions involved in specific projects or publications.

Overall, the rise in Azerbaijani scientists’ international scientific activities in the first eight months of 2024 is evident in the increase in the quantity and quality of scientific works, as well as advancements in international collaboration. These achievements significantly contribute to the development of science in Azerbaijan and enhance its recognition on the international stage. The successes of our scientists on the “Scopus” platform pave the way for broader scientific perspectives and further development of international collaboration in the future.
