ICPE 2024 Opens in Shanghai: Charting a Global Innovation Blueprint for Energy and Power, Highlighting China’s Technological Leadership

From December 13 to 15, 2024, the 5th International Conference on Power Engineering (ICPE 2024) was grandly held in Shanghai. Jointly organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Power & Energy Society (PES), and Shanghai Electric Power University, the conference received strong support from renowned universities both domestically and internationally, including the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Harbin Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in Canada, Politecnico di Milano in Italy, University of Ferrara in Italy, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Mansoura University in Egypt, and Horus University in Egypt. The conference attracted experts and scholars from multiple countries and regions worldwide, with nearly 120 delegates gathering to discuss technological innovations and the latest developments in intelligent detection and control within the energy and power sector.

The opening ceremony was officially held on the morning of December 14, with Professor Peng Daogang, Dean of the School of Automation Engineering at Shanghai Electric Power University, and Professor Chen Hui, Deputy Dean, delivering opening remarks. Professor Peng emphasized that in the context of the “dual carbon” goals, achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality has become a global focus. The convening of this conference is timely and significant, particularly in promoting the development of renewable energy, building new power systems and new energy frameworks, and will provide important guidance for future research and practice in the power and energy field. Professor Chen extended a warm welcome to the delegates, introduced the disciplinary construction of the School of Automation Engineering at Shanghai Electric Power University, and expressed his expectations for the smooth proceeding of the conference, anticipating that academic exchanges would facilitate the integration and innovation of new technologies.

The keynote speeches featured several renowned experts in the field, including Professor Geng Hua from Tsinghua University and Professor Lai Laili from Guangdong University of Technology, who shared the latest research results and technological advancements on topics such as renewable energy, smart grids, and sustainable energy. Additionally, the conference included nine sub-sessions, two poster presentations, and three excellent student paper competitions, along with various interactive activities. Three Young Scientist Awards and three Excellent Student Paper Awards were ultimately selected.

The conference focused on hot research areas such as the operation and control of new power systems, integrated energy and virtual power plants, power robots and drive systems, power energy storage systems, and power system security. Delegates actively participated in various discussions, stimulating innovative thinking and promoting exchanges and cooperation among scholars from different academic backgrounds. Through these interactive sessions, participants not only broadened their academic horizons but also laid a solid foundation for future research collaboration and technological advancements.
