With so much of the career and recruitment industry moving online and into the digital space, recruiters have come up with various strategies to simplify the recruitment process for them. One of those strategies includes using AI to filter through candidates to find those who match certain characteristics and qualifications.
However, many candidates aren’t aware of recruiters using AI technology and therefore don’t have their resumes or profiles set up to flag them as being a good fit for potential job offers. This is a big problem for both recruiters and potential employees. When individuals don’t have their information set up in a way to accurately reflect their experience and be chosen by AI for a matching position, then recruiters lose out on finding the potential perfect candidate, and candidates lose out on potential job opportunities.
So what can be done to remedy this problem?
Qualifications MUST be specified
Often candidates have an advantage in in-person recruitment. When someone hand-selects them based on their overall application versus being disqualified for not matching one specific criterion, candidates are able to highlight a value that can benefit a company and makes up for lacking in a different area.
With AI this is not the case. If there is a certain criterion that isn’t fulfilled, the candidate is an automatic out. This means that candidates MUST specify their qualifications and truly include every skill set that they feel would be valuable to a job that they would like to have.
AI filters out those who simply don’t meet qualifications. If a candidate is aware of the basic requirements that are necessary for that specific job, it is crucial that they list them in their resume.
Including the right keywords
One way how AI tracks whether someone is a good fit for a position is by searching for relevant keywords. If a candidate doesn’t have those listed, then it’s unlikely that they will be part of the smaller pool of candidates to pick for the job. Keywords can be anything from certifications, the languages a candidate speaks, the software they’re able to use, or the degree a person has.
If a candidate is concerned about not being matched due to a lack of keywords, then it’s important that they look at the job description and listing and create a resume specifically for that job. They can also use online tools that will let them know what the important keywords are in a job description.
Resumes should be easy to read
Candidates should keep in mind that their resumes should be easy to read, and easy for a person (or AI) to determine quickly whether or not they meet the requirements for a certain position. There are some specific formats that candidates can choose from:
– Chronological
– Functional
– Combination
If a candidate keeps in mind to write their resume in a way that a recruiter can decide within minutes if they are a good fit for the position, then it most likely will also pass the AI test.
Document format
This is a bit of a heated debate in the recruitment world, but the document format can make a difference in terms of how readable it is to AI. The two formats where there seems to be a consensus that AI responds well to them are pdf and word doc. Out of those two, if someone had to choose, word doc is the way to go.
However, if a specific document format is listed, then candidates should obviously choose that file type over any other.
Keep it simple
Resumes aren’t supposed to be works of art, and quite frankly an AI won’t appreciate it anyway. Therefore, it’s important to keep it simple. Don’t create any kind of out-of-the-ordinary formatting, because it is a waste of time and different formatting supposedly does impact the likelihood of an AI choosing you as a good fit for the position.
The formatting options that don’t impact AI include things like writing words bold, italicized, or underlined, using bullets, as well as using colors. With colors, a candidate should keep in mind that AI will view everything as one color and therefore it won’t make a difference for anyone but the candidate themselves.
