Euro 2024: Breakout Stars to Keep an Eye On

0

Germany will play host to this summer’s European Championships with 24 teams from across the continent vying for Henri Delaunay Trophy.

Italy won the last edition on penalties, with the likes of France, Spain and England tipped for glory this time around.

But elsewhere, the competition will also provide the top young talent from across Europe to shine on the biggest stage.

And ahead of the group stages, Flashscore have highlighted five potential breakout stars to keep an eye on at Euro 2024.

Adam Wharton (20) – England

If you weren’t aware of his nationality before watching him play, you’d expect Adam Wharton to have come straight out of the Barcelona Academy, such is his composed demeanour when in possession.

A classy operator, the 20-year-old has caught the eye for Crystal Palace this year, with his form earning him a maiden call-up to the England squad.

But Wharton isn’t there to just make up the numbers, as calls for the ex-Blackburn Rovers gem to start for the Three Lions gathering pace.

Should he be given the chance, expect Wharton to shine in Germany for Gareth Southgate’s side this summer.

Arda Guler (19) – Turkey

It’s rare a player already on the books at Real Madrid is being considered as a possible breakout star, but such is Arda Guler’s talent, a solid showing in Germany could take his stocks to a whole new level.

While he only made 12 appearances across all competitions for Los Blancos last season, Guler did register an impressive six goals.

The dynamic forward will be keen to carry that form over to the Euros, with Guler expected to play a key role for Turkey.

And given they’ve been drawn against Portugal, Czechia and Georgia, Guler’s Turkey have a very real chance of progressing into the knockouts.

Joao Neves (19) – Portugal

Another midfield maestro to keep your eyes on in Germany, Joao Neves is the latest starlet to emerge from the Portuguese production line.

Coming into the tournament on the back of a stellar season with Benfica, Neves is already attracting interest from the biggest names across the continent.

He’ll face competition for minutes though, with Joao Palhinha, Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha likely to start Portugal’s opening match.

But even if it’s off the bench, Neves will no doubt shine for a team that has a real chance of lifting the trophy.

Warren Zaire-Emery (18) – France

It’s hard enough to break into a national team at the best of times, but given the embarrassment of riches at France’s disposal, Les Bleus might have the most impressive talent pool.

That hasn’t stopped youngster Warren Zaire-Emery from securing a spot on the plane though, having shone for Paris Saint-Germain last time out.

An ever-present in the PSG starting XI, Zaire-Emery will now be hoping to impress Didier Deschamps and earn a spot in the French side for the Euros.

And his energy in midfield could prove crucial for France, as they eye up a first European Championships triumph in over two decades.

Benjamin Sesko (21) – Slovenia

It was looking like it could end up a busy summer for Benjamin Sesko, with the striker having being linked to a Premier League transfer.

But with a contract extension at RB Leipzig forthcoming instead, Sesko can focus all of his attention on Slovenia’s first Euros appearance since 2000.

They face a tough task though, with England, Denmark and Serbia also drawn in Group C.

However, with goal machine Sesko in their ranks, Slovenia could prove a surprise package when the tournament gets underway.
