Mother’s Day Special Feature | By Sayali B.
Every so often, we encounter a story that redefines strength—not just through the milestones achieved, but through the weight of everything carried along the way. This Mother’s Day, we honor one such story—the journey of Dilara Rustamzada, a tech visionary, entrepreneur, and mother of two, whose path weaves together courage, intellect, and an unshakable will to rise.

Born and raised in Azerbaijan, Dilara came to the United States with more than a decade of experience in technology and digital transformation. She had already led government innovation programs, co-founded startups, and received national recognition as a Tech Woman of the Year in 2021. But nothing quite prepared her for the chapter that would begin when she stepped onto the campus of Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management—as a newly single mother of two small children.
“When I started my MBA, my son was 2 and my daughter was 5. I had just become a single mom. It was one of the most difficult and defining moments of my life,” Dilara shares.
Pursuing one of the most rigorous business programs in the world while raising two toddlers would be daunting for anyone. For Dilara, it meant mastering case studies after bedtime, joining strategy calls during nap time, and turning every ounce of exhaustion into fuel.
“I didn’t have the luxury to slow down. I was building a new future for us. My children were watching. And I needed them to see that we are capable of overcoming anything.”
While most students were navigating career paths, Dilara was juggling daycare pick-ups, managing illnesses, and attending group meetings with one hand on a laptop and the other cradling a child. And yet, she thrived—not just academically, but as a community leader and an entrepreneurial force.
Carving a Path in a Male-Dominated Industry
Even before business school, Dilara had already made a name for herself in tech. She spent over a decade designing and implementing large-scale digital transformation initiatives, co-founding successful ventures, and mentoring women in STEM. Her leadership style—grounded in empathy and strategic clarity—has made her a sought-after advisor for early-stage startups and a respected voice in AI, education, and public sector innovation.
But the tech world wasn’t always welcoming.
“There were times I walked into rooms where I was the only woman, the only mother, the only person with an unconventional background. It wasn’t easy to be heard, especially when you lead with empathy in a space that often rewards aggression,” she explains.
What set Dilara apart, however, wasn’t just her ability to navigate these spaces—it was her ability to reshape them. She built inclusive teams, championed women and underrepresented voices, and brought a human-centered lens to a field often driven by numbers alone.
“Tech should work for people, not the other way around. I’ve always believed that digital transformation must be rooted in real human needs—and that’s where I operate best.”
The Power of Grit and Grace
So how does she do it all? The truth is—Dilara has never asked for it to be easy. She has simply chosen not to quit.
“There were moments of exhaustion, of course. But I never saw them as weakness. They were proof that I was giving everything I had—to my children, my work, and my future. I didn’t just survive those years—I built something extraordinary in the middle of them.”

Today, Dilara stands not only as a successful tech entrepreneur and respected digital transformation leader, but also as a role model for women redefining what modern leadership can look like. She’s proof that motherhood doesn’t pause ambition—it sharpens it. It adds depth, purpose, and relentless drive.
“When my daughter says she wants to be an engineer like me, or my son draws pictures of his future startup, I know I’ve done more than build a career—I’ve built a legacy.”
This Mother’s Day, Dilara won’t just be celebrating with her children—she’ll be honoring the journey they’ve taken together. A journey of rebuilding, rising, and thriving. A journey that turned challenge into triumph.
“We’ve created a life full of meaning, momentum, and impact. That’s the greatest success I could ever ask for.”
A Final Message to Moms Everywhere
When asked what advice she would give to other mothers chasing big dreams, she replies:
“You don’t have to wait for the ‘right’ moment. That moment may never come. Start now. Your kids don’t need you to be perfect—they need to see you trying. One step at a time. Your journey will become their story of courage.”
To every mother who’s building a dream between nap schedules and Zoom meetings, who’s rewriting the rules of what leadership and motherhood can look like—we see you. And this Mother’s Day, we celebrate you.
Happy Mother’s Day, Dilara. Thank you for showing us what’s possible.
