Simar Bedi of Sol Recycling appeared on Global News with Ross Hull
Toronto, ON, April 11, 2025 – Qwoted Newswire – Simar Bedi, the founder of Sol Recycling, was on Global News April 8th with Ross Hull to share advances and the myths of recycling in Canada, in honour of April which is Earth Month. Bedi says that the dominating conversation around waste goes to landfill owners, but the questions of how to manage waste should be directed to recyclers such as Sol Recycling. He recycles 2 NFL football fields of waste out of landfills in Canada each month and is in his eleventh year of business. Bedi says having bigger conversations about waste is necessary but should include more recyclers over primarily waste corporations.
Bedi says Canadians find recycling confusing because there are nuances by region on what can be recycled. He notes there are spikes during the holidays, and there are some things we should steer away from. Those things include plastic water bottles, single-use plastics, sparkle-covered greeting cards, and wrapping paper that has a plastic coating. A lot of these items trick people, but when a material gets blended, it’s compromised and not recyclable.
On Global News, Bedi showed ‘advances in recycling’ and talked about what makes something actually recyclable. He has been quoted before suggesting Canadians take a chapter out of what Europeans are doing, such as using a pasta noodle to drink a cold coffee or what he enjoys, planting a vegetable garden and composting food as nutrients for the garden, buying a great non-branded reusable shopping bag, and gifting things in that versus store-bought single-use wrapping. Buy vintage, well-made products; buy less, buy better.
Bedi has a new recycling plant opening in Burlington, Ontario, on Earth Day, April 22, 2025. He says his goal is to teach Canadians what zero waste looks like and believes we should all understand that landfills make no sense when garbage is a commodity traded in the global markets. Bedi wants to explain Zero waste to anyone who wants to know how this could be done in North America where landfills continue to be enlarged. He says end of life plastic is a problem and we need to find a use for it. He has come up with a lumber replacement that he is ready to introduce to the North American building sector.
