As part of COP29, a High-Level Session titled “The Power of Collaboration: Joint Efforts for Net Zero” was held in collaboration with the World Economic Forum. The session focused on attracting international financial resources for climate issues and expanding partnerships for sustainable development.
Organized by the Ministry of Economy, the Export and Investment Promotion Agency – AZPROMO, and the World Economic Forum, this High-Level Session aimed to drive meaningful discussion on joint efforts toward net-zero emissions.
Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov shared insights on principles supporting collective efforts to combat climate change, global policies in this area, and the private sector’s contributions. He highlighted the importance of inclusive, sustainable actions for ensuring positive change in this field and emphasized a fair approach that includes all nations. Information was provided on Azerbaijan’s goals and ongoing efforts in sustainable growth and the green economy. Attention was drawn to the country’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies and innovative solutions to achieve green energy goals, underscoring the importance of international cooperation.
Director-General of the World Trade Organization Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala discussed the importance of aligning global trade policies with climate adaptation and supporting developing countries within this context.
Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry, and Trade Laziz Kudratov emphasized the importance of international cooperation to counter global climate change, regional initiatives, and joint projects in renewable energy.
Jim Huay Neo, Executive Director of the World Economic Forum and moderator of the session, highlighted that the transition to net-zero carbon emissions provides significant opportunities for economic growth and job creation, emphasizing the need for a collaborative and comprehensive approach to ensure a fair distribution of benefits and costs.
Rich Lesser, Global Chair and CEO of the Boston Consulting Group and Co-Chair of the Climate Leaders Alliance, noted that from 2019-2022 they achieved a 10% reduction in total emissions while increasing overall revenues by 18%. He stressed the need for closer cooperation between the private sector and governments to engage businesses more effectively in climate action, highlighting that clear policies and strong partnership mechanisms are crucial for positive change.
Andrew Forrest, Executive Chairman of Fortescue, emphasized the importance of obtaining energy from green sources in combating climate change. He stated that increasing investments in the renewable energy sector and promoting technological innovation are key to achieving global climate goals.
Participants stressed the necessity of global collective action to address the climate crisis. Governments, companies, and civil society organizations were called upon to accept shared responsibility and join the fight against climate change with concrete action plans.
