Sydney, Australia, 29th Aug 2024 – When you think about the journey of a lawyer, you might imagine a straight path of academic achievements, internships, and well-placed connections. But for Rose Torossian, the path was anything but linear. From the moment she was born, Rose has defied the odds, overcoming unimaginable struggles to carve out a place for herself in a world that never expected her to succeed.
A Life Marked by Survival
Born in Lebanon during a time of war, her early life was filled with danger. She narrowly avoided death in a hospital under siege and survived attempts on her life by family members. These experiences could have made her a statistic—another child lost to war, domestic violence, or poverty.
Growing up in Redfern’s government housing, surrounded by crime and addiction, Rose faced many challenges. Despite being told by teachers that she wouldn’t make it out of high school, she focused on her education and eventually found her way into the field of law.
The Long Road to Legal Success
Rose’s journey to becoming a lawyer was not easy. After earning her Bachelor of Media, Master of Arts in International Communication, and Bachelor of Laws, she faced the daunting task of securing two years of supervised legal practice—a requirement filled with obstacles, particularly for women of color. The legal field, dominated by white male privilege, presented numerous challenges, including bullying, sexual harassment, and socioeconomic discrimination. Yet, Rose persevered, even when it meant working for less than minimum wage and enduring chronic pain from past injuries.
It took Rose five years to complete the necessary two years of legal supervision, a testament to her unyielding determination. During this time, she was fortunate to find a mentor in Michael Finnane, a former district court judge who recognised her potential and provided the guidance she needed to navigate the legal system. His support, along with her own grit, helped Rose achieve her goal of becoming a lawyer—an accomplishment that defied the expectations of everyone around her.
Launching Jo’kaklian Lawyers
On July 31, 2024, Rose took the ultimate step in her legal career by launching her own law firm, Jo’kaklian Lawyers. Named in honor of her late mother’s maiden name, the firm is more than just a business; it’s a symbol of Rose’s triumph over adversity and her commitment to helping others overcome their own challenges.
Jo’kaklian Lawyers offers a wide range of legal services, including wills and estates, family law, commercial law, criminal law, employment law, and discrimination law. Rose is also a qualified NMAS (now known as Amdras) mediator, offering mediation services for issues such as debt recovery, construction disputes, and domestic violence matters.
While the firm provides comprehensive legal support, Rose’s focus is currently on family law and wills and estates—areas where she feels she can make the most impact. Her target audience includes individuals in need of compassionate, yet assertive legal representation, particularly those who may feel marginalised or overlooked by the traditional legal system.
The Future of Jo’kaklian Lawyers
