Norwich-based PSH Environmental Ltd has achieved a significant milestone by winning the Innovative Environmental Technology Award from Business Awards UK. This accolade underscores the company’s dedication to pioneering advancements in sustainable waste management.

Founded in 1985 as Parkers Skip Hire, PSH Environmental has grown into a leader in the waste and recycling industry. As a family-owned and operated business, the company has maintained a commitment to environmental stewardship across three generations. With a promise of “100% waste diversion from landfill”, the company has led by example, processing waste in the most efficient and eco-friendly manner possible. Their efforts include the mechanical and manual separation of waste to extract recyclable materials and convert non-recyclable waste into Refuse Derived Fuel, which is then used to generate electricity in Europe.

Groundbreaking Technology

PSH Environmental is becoming renowned for an innovative use of technology to enhance sustainability. A key highlight is their deployment of the world’s first solar-powered electric shredder, a groundbreaking achievement in the waste management sector. This shredder, powered entirely by solar energy, can process a tonne of wood in just three minutes, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting emissions.

Last year, the company installed 798 solar panels, generating over 386,000 kWh of energy annually and reducing carbon emissions by 123 tonnes—the equivalent of planting 80 trees. This investment in renewable energy exemplifies PSH Environmental’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting a circular economy.

Zero Waste to Landfill

PSH Environmental’s “100% waste diversion from landfill” promise is enabled by a state-of-the-art materials recycling facility in Norfolk, where waste is meticulously sorted both manually and mechanically. Materials such as metal, wood, green waste, and cardboard are recycled, while non-recyclable waste is converted into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and transported to Europe for incineration to produce electricity.

Community Engagement and Environmental Stewardship

Beyond technological advancements, PSH Environmental is deeply invested in community and environmental initiatives. Their “Clean Up to Green Up” initiative, launched in partnership with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, aims to restore arable farmland back to its ancient woodland state. This project has already seen PSH donate over £18,000 over the last 2 years, showcasing the company’s commitment to local environmental restoration.

With invitations extended to industry professionals, environmental advocates and local officials, including MP Jerome Mayhew of the Environmental Audit Committee, it’ll offer a unique opportunity to see the innovative UNTHA XR shredder in action.

The demonstration day will feature comprehensive tours of the facility, showcasing the entire waste processing journey from initial sorting to the creation of RDF. Attendees will gain insights into the sophisticated technology and methodologies that enable PSH to achieve zero waste to landfill. This event is not only a celebration of the company’s achievements but also a platform to inspire and educate others in the industry on sustainable practices.
