Surge in U.S. Homelessness: 2023 Records Highest Numbers

In 2023, new data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reveals a concerning 12% surge in homelessness across the United States compared to the previous year. The numbers, with approximately 653,100 individuals experiencing homelessness on a single night in January, mark the highest reported since HUD began tracking in 2007, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.

Demographic disparities are evident, disproportionately impacting Black, African, and Indigenous communities. Despite constituting 13% of the U.S. population, Black individuals account for 37% of those experiencing homelessness. Asian and Asian American homelessness rose by 40%, while Hispanic and Latino homelessness increased by 28%.

Families with children face a significant impact, with a 16% increase in homelessness, constituting nearly 28% of the overall homeless population. Unaccompanied youth under 25 make up 22% of those facing homelessness.

Gender imbalances are apparent, with men representing 61% of the homeless population and constituting the majority of homeless veterans.

While the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on shelter use has diminished, the expiration of pandemic-era social safety net programs, including income protections and eviction moratoria, throughout the year has exacerbated the crisis.

Attributed to rising housing prices and decreased assistance during the pandemic, the homelessness crisis is further compounded by the shortage of affordable homes and high housing costs, according to experts like Jeff Olivet, executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness.

Geographically, the largest homeless populations are concentrated in California, New York, Florida, and Washington. Notably, New Hampshire and New Mexico experienced the most significant increases in homelessness, with spikes of 52% and 50%, respectively.

This troubling trend represents a stark reversal of previous declines in homelessness, underscoring the pressing need for sustained efforts to address root causes and ensure a more secure future for all those affected.
