Nonprofit organizations serve social issues and support the public in a variety of capacities; from youth development and women’s shelters to medical research and animal shelters. Over the years, these social service agencies have become more and more critical to the health of our communities. Today there are around 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the United States and 10 million worldwide.

However, it is estimated that only half of all nonprofits are successful; furthermore, it has been stated that approximately 30% will close within 10 years of beginning.

Nonprofit employees cite low pay, lack of career development opportunities, and poorly lead organizations as their main reasons for quitting. In addition, one quarter of employees who plan on quitting stated that they probably won’t look for a new job in the nonprofit sector. Approximately 45% of surveyed nonprofit employees say they’ll likely quit their jobs by 2025, indicating high rates of turnover and burnout in these organizations.

However, nonprofit organizations employ about 10% of the workforce in the United States or about 16 million people. If that sounds like a big number, it’s because it is. Nonprofits represent about 5.7% of the United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Nonprofits are organizations whose primary purpose is to solve social issues instead of making a profit. While this is true, nonprofits still need lots of money flowing into them to accomplish this task.
